This year's adventure ...

Welcome to the big trip of 2011 ... well, it's the big trip for Karen and myself anyway.

There are only a few weeks to go. Apart from the last-minute dashes into the Alps, both of us having been busy preparing for the going-home. My job has been the selection and booking of a removal firm ... the painstaking cleaning of the Lotus to satisfy Australian quarantine officials ... and the various administrative tasks after the 40-foot container arrives downunder 2 months later. Karen's job has been to plan those intervening 2 months.

You'll be pleased to know that this blog is about the intervening 2 months ... and not about the administrative minutiae of moving countries for the 7th time.

In an effort to synchronise our arrival with that of the container ... we will do a lot of travelling by slow train across the biggest landmass on this planet. Occasionally we will use airplanes, mostly to get across stretches of water, but the intent was to complete as much as possible on terra firma.

This is what the journey will look like ...

The journey will take us by train across Switzerland and France ... by plane to Ireland and UK ... before another flight to Moscow where we board the Trans-Siberian Railway. From then on, it's all train through Russia and Mongolia, as well as around China for 6 weeks ... before catching a series of flights to get us from Chengdu in China to Melbourne.
